Dubai’s Pearl Demolition Has Finally Begun After 21 Years

Twenty-one years after the Dubai Pearl was announced, the project is finally being demolished.

The demolition is rumoured to have been taking place over the last few weeks, but today Dubai Media City residents felt the quake of the buildings being knocked down.

Several people have shared photos of the explosion on Twitter.

When first announced, initial plans involved four towers with 1,490 apartments, seven five-star hotels, over 60 restaurants and a 1,600-seat theatre.

Sat between Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village, the plan was to create a “city within a city.”

Apart from that, the site overlooked Palm Jumeirah.

But now the demolition has taken place, it remains to be seen what will happen next.

One option would be the Dubai Moon project – a 360-degree recreation of the moon on a grand scale.

Proposed and co-founded by Sandra G. Matthews and Michael R. Henderson, the resort is designed to be built in 48 months and will have an overall height of 735 feet (224 metres).

Henderson spoke to about his ambitious plans.

He said: “We believe the now cancelled Dubai Pearl project site would be a perfect location for Moon Dubai. In the Middle East, Dubai is the most logical and compelling location.”
