Dubai Carrefour: Pay For Groceries Using Just Your Face

Facial recognition is becoming a part of daily life in Dubai city. And here comes the good news.

You never need to worry about forgetting your wallet again while shopping, as supermarket chain ‘Carrefour’ has introduced ‘Face Pay’ shopping.

Teaming up with Network International, Carrefour shoppers can now pay for their trolley of food with a smile at the facial recognition scanner.

All you need to do is register your face using the Carrefour app to start using the service, which is in use now.

Bernardo Perloiro, chief operating officer of GCC at Majid Futtaim Retail, said: “Face verification will make it easier and more convenient for our customers to check out efficiently – without having to reach for their wallets.

“This safe, seamless payment method only takes a few seconds, and we are excited to be one of the first retailers to be rolling this out across the UAE in partnership with PopID and Network International.”

The technology was created by PopID, while Network International are dispensing it out across the UAE. The partnership with Carrefour is the first retail Face Pay payment in the region.

In the future, Carrefour’s Face Pay system will likely be linked to earning loyalty points as PopID has trailed this in America and Japan.

John Miller, CEO at PopID, said: “In America and Japan, we have demonstrated that allowing consumers to link Face Pay to loyalty accounts and payment methods enhances revenue, increases the speed of ordering and check out, drives loyalty engagement, and reduces fraud.”

He added: “We are excited to implement the platform with Carrefour and Network International in grocery for the first time in this region.”

As facial recognition becomes a part of normal life, we could also be saying goodbye to passports when travelling in favour of using our faces.
