Catch A Meteor Shower In The UAE This Weekend

Fan of the night sky? Get ready to stargaze this weekend as Leonids will appear.

The meteors – comet debris that’s hurtling into the atmosphere at great speed – range from sand grain size to pebble-sized and make pretty colourful streaks as they enter the earth’s atmosphere.

A typical Leonid arrives at a speed of 71 kilometres per second (that’s more than 200 times faster than a bullet).

The Leonids, one of the most famous meteor showers, peak during mid-November each year.

Head to Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah (one of the best places in the UAE to see the sky at night) on Friday November 17 and Saturday November 18.

Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) is organising a viewing of the starry phenomenon on Friday evening, from 10pm to 3am.

The event will offer activities designed to ensure the best possible viewing experience, with telescopes for guests to use as well as information provided by expert guides.

Just remember to carry snacks as nothing is available there for miles.

Oh, and also, bring some blankets to have a warm and cozy night as it will probably be really cold.

Tickets are Dhs200 for kids under 13 and Dhs250 for adults. If you are a DAG member, you get discounted Dhs150 tickets.

Once you register on the DAG website, you’ll get a message telling you about the meeting point.

From Dhs200. Fri Nov 17- Sat Nov 18. 10pm-3am. Jebel Jais. Dubai Astronomy Group (04 221 6603).
