A Micromoon To Occur In The Dubai Sky This Week

We had the Perseids Meteor shower illuminate the night sky over the weekend.

There’s another celestial event taking place in Dubai this week as a Micromoon will be in the sky.

Wednesday August 16 is when the Micromoon (which is a New Moon) will make an appearance.

What makes a new Micromoon? It’s when the New Moon is at its farthest point from Earth (which, in astronomy, is named the apogee).

Wednesday’s Micromoon will not be visible with the naked eye, with a telescope or binoculars as the side of the Moon facing the Earth will not be illuminated by the Sun.

Don’t be too disappointed though, as on Thursday August 31, there will then be another Full Moon, which is known as a Blue Moon in Dubai.

You will have trouble missing the Blue Moon as it will be a Supermoon.

A Supermoon appears larger and brighter than other full moons, so prepare to be in awe.

Supermoons happen when a Full Moon coincides with the Moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee.

Thursday August 31’s Supermoon will be the second of the month as there was also one on the night of Tuesday August 1.
